Why Restaurants Need a Mobile Website

Does your Restaurant Need a Mobile Website?

Mobile Apps for RestaurantsMany restaurants don’t have restaurant websites at all, much less a mobile website. Restaurant owners and managers may assume that a convenient location, tasty food and good atmosphere are enough – seems like they should be, but sadly that’s just not true.

Increasingly, people rely on technology to recommend their choice of dining locale – from mobile web searches to sites such as FourSquare or Yelp to social media-based recommendations. Mobile web searches are growing by 200% a year and are expected to outdistance PC and laptop searches this year.

Without mobile websites for restaurants, potential diners may not be aware you exist or reject you out of hand for lack of a mobile version of website. 40% of mobile searches are now for local businesses – often restaurants. If your establishment has eschewed mobile website development, you are losing customers every day.

If your eatery does have a traditional website, don’t assume that it also functions as a mobile website. Development of a mobile website is a different process altogether. Full-fledged websites are not navigable on smart phones and are therefore useless.

The good news is that developing mobile websites for restaurants is both simple and affordable. If you already have website and simply need a mobile version of website, you can look to sources such as www.dudamobile.com that will do the conversion gratis so you have a free mobile website.

You can also find a low-cost mobile website developer on one of the many hiring forums such as Craigslist or Fivver. Or you can do it yourself with a free mobile website builder that uses mobile website templates for fast and low-tech mobile website design.

Mobile Website Training for Restaurants

Mobile website development is not nearly as complex as a traditional website. It’s simple enough to do yourself with or without a mobile website developer. Mobile websites for restaurants need only a few bits of crucial information, such as:

  • Location – with click to navigate directions
  • Hours of operation
  • Phone number – click to call, preferably
  • Menu – must be fast-loading and easy to read
  • Mobile website design for restaurant websites can also include, as options:
  • Reservation services
  • Take-out ordering
  • Social media links
  • Opt-ins for text message offers

When considering what to do with your mobile website builder, if you’re working with mobile website templates, bear in mind that every available option is not needed when you establish your restaurant websites. When it comes to mobile version of website, less is more.

In addition to having the basic information listed above, there are some critical no-no’s you don’t want to commit when looking at mobile website development, including:

No Flash – most mobile devices won’t play flash – leave it out, no matter what your mobile website developer says

No PDFs – your mobile version of website does not need slow-loading PDF menus

No music or soundtrack – where you’re getting a free mobile website or doing it yourself using a mobile website builder, don’t think about it – it’s annoying and unnecessary

No typos – be sure as you work on website design that you spend time on copy and have someone edit the work looking for typos, grammar and spelling errors that make work look sloppy

Bad photos – restaurant websites are better off without photos than with poor photos – use a professional for photos of the food rather than having self-taken amateur shots that could turn-off potential diners

If you don’t feel up to jumping into mobile website design yourself, consider a free mobile website option such as offered by Duda Mobile – there are many templates to choose from with customization options that can have your website mobilized in just a few minutes.

This is a great option to take right away to establish a mobile presence and then you can take your time considering whether you need to hire a mobile website developer for a more customized mobile presence.

To get that hungry customer on the go, it’s best to have a mobile website. You could farm it out to an IT firm that will bill you a fortune, or with a little training you can do it yourself. I would do it myself.
